House Industries has completely overhauled renowned bicycle builder Richard Sachs’ graphic program with a new color scheme, redrawn signature, and refined layout for his custom Signature road frames and cyclocross team-edition frames.
Richard Sachs: “Two years ago I decided to walk away from more than three decades of graphic hand-wringing and pursue a new but timeless visual program for every frame I build. My friends at House Industries were able to interpret my random ramblings and visual baggage to create something I love and will be proud to work with until I stop racing and building bikes, whenever that might be.”
House’s designers and artists worked with master painter Joe Bell and decal expert Gary Prange to create unique color mixes and frame graphics that reflect the elegant simplicity of each Richard Sachs bicycle. The new designs provide both the consistency and flexibility needed to accommodate a variety of frame sizes and component arrangements. For example, the Richard Sachs logo pattern on the seat tube is carefully balanced to account for the wide carbon fiber front derailleur clamp.
The new Richard Sachs downtube logo and word mark is based on House Industries’ versatile Neutraface font family and is cast as a permanent fixture on Sachs’ custom front and rear dropouts. House Industries also refined and redrew a version of the Richard Sachs signature for use on the bicycle top tube and in other branding elements.
Rich Roat from House Industries: “Richard Sachs is a modern one-man industrial revolution who embodies all that is right in the world of bicycle building and in any enterprise for that matter. It may be a long wait for one of his bicycles, but his philosophy and ideals are accessible to everyone right now. That really resonated with us.”
Widely recognized as the “Godfather” of bicycle building in the United States, Richard Sachs has been a key player in fostering the growth and sustainability of the custom bicycle-building trade by encouraging competition, establishing standards and sharing knowledge. Customers now wait up to seven years for one of his custom frames.
Richard Sachs and House Industries will continue to work together as the bicycle-building business and cyclocross team move forward. All new Richard Sachs frames will feature a House tall script logo decal to symbolize the ongoing partnership.
Racing has been a key part of Sachs’ frame-building business since 1974. Each year, he single-handedly builds 10 dedicated race bicycles from raw tubing and fields an elite, four-member UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) -sanctioned team. The Richard Sachs Cyclocross Team races mainly in the UCI C1 and UCI C2 events on the east coast, and will complete the season at Cyclocross National Championships in January 2014.
The new graphic program debuted in Vermont at the Catamount Grand Prix in Williston, Vermont on September 15, 2013. The design will be phased into Sachs’ custom Signature road bicycles shortly thereafter.
